VESPERBILD.The origins of Michelangelo’s Pietà

Vesperbild. The origins of Michelangelo’s Pietà curated by Antonio Mazzotta in collaboration with Claudio Salsi at Sforza Castle in Milan, is an exhibition dedicated to the origins of the iconography of the Pietà, with particular reference to the creation of Michelangelo’s Vatican Pietà.

By using paintings and sculptures it shows the Nordic origins of this theme, which Michelangelo worked on for his entire artistic life. The early Vatican Pietà is in fact an example of a Vesperbild, a type of iconography originating in northern Europe, which became successful in Italy at the end of the 15th century.

The artistic path is made by 24 works also comining from other major museums including the Musée du Louvre in Paris and the British Museum.
