The Archaeological Museum, visited by more than 50.000 tourists a year, is located within an extraordinary architectural context, the former Convent of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, founded in the 8th century, where the story of ancient Milan is on display.
The Museum includes sections dedicated to Ancient Milan (four itineraries), the Early Middle Ages, the Etruscan and the Greek sections , as well as two little sections on Gandhara Art and on the city of Cesarea Marittima, distributed in several rooms.
Through an old passage that has been reopened in 2011, it is possible to enter directly the Chorus of the Church of San Maurizio, dating back to the 16th century, now entrusted by the Diocese to the Municipality. Beside the exhibition areas, the Museum has a room for laboratories and conferences and two spaces for temporary exhibitions.
